Letter from Birmingham Jail

by Holly on January 16, 2012

I’m ashamed to admit that until today, I hadn’t read this letter in it’s entirety since high school- a long time ago. As I meditated on Dr King’s words this morning, I found myself wondering what responding to his call for mercy and justice looks like in my life today and if I have embraced the grace required to walk out that kind of faith.

As you read the text below, I encourage you to consider Micah 6:8 and pray: Lord, how would you have me act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God.

Letter from Birmingham Jail
by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., April 16, 1963

My Dear Fellow Clergymen:

While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your recent statement calling present activities “unwise and untimely.” Seldom do I pause to answer criticism of my work and ideas. If I sought to answer all the criticisms that cross my desk, my secretaries would have little time for anything other than such correspondence in the course of the day, and I would have no time for constructive work. But since I feel that you are men of genuine good will and that your criticisms are sincerely set forth, I want to try to answer your statement in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms.

I think I should indicate why I am here in Birmingham, since you have been influenced by the view which argues against “outsiders coming in.” I have the honor of serving as President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern state, with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. We have some eighty-five affiliated organizations across the South, and one of them is the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights. Frequently we share staff, educational and financial resources with our affiliates. Several months ago the affiliate here in Birmingham asked us to be on call to engage in a nonviolent direct-action program if such were deemed necessary. We readily consented, and when the hour came we lived up to our promise. So I, along with several members of my staff, am here because I was invited here. I am here because I have organizational ties here.

But more basically, I am in Birmingham because injustice is here. Just as the prophets of the eighth century B.C. left their villages and carried their “thus saith the Lord” far beyond the boundaries of their home towns, and just as the Apostle Paul left his village of Tarsus and carried the gospel of Jesus Christ to the far corners of the Greco-Roman world, so am I compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my own home town. Like Paul, I must constantly respond to the Macedonian call for aid.

How Great is Our God

by Holly on December 9, 2011

My husband, Rhett sent me this earlier today. Chris Tomlin and worship leaders from around the world are praising God in English, Hindi, Indonesian, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Zulu, Africaans, and Mandarin Chinese. Surely these are some of the sounds of heaven. My heart wants more!

Musings on Immanuel

by Linda

Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel; which is, being interpreted, God with us. And Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took unto him his wife; and knew her not till she [...]

Last night, OMPC Artists Creating in Community held its second night of creative offerings. Below are a few samples of the beauty that was shared. Tricia Robinson:  Door of Hope “Therefore, behold, I will allure her and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her.  And there I will give her her vineyards [...]

Extravagant Love

by Holly

Extravagant Love that knows no bounds Takes me through the affliction of life Your comforting arms would not be found Unless tears and loss usher me to Your side You hold me in the darkness Shine light on these weary eyes I’m engulfed in my circumstances And long to be freed of this fright You [...]

In Her Own Words: Penny Parham

by Holly

In August 2010, I traveled with six other women to Chisinau, Moldova with a Birmingham based organization called Global Women.  This team of women went to support Beginning of Life (BoL), a faith based organization that works to holistically restore victims of human trafficking to a place of spiritual, emotional and physical wholeness.  Together, these [...]

True Self

by Michele

The other night I was reading to my daughters as a part of our nightly devotional. The word “devotional” is used so loosely because though not irreverent, I flirt with the ridiculous as we read through the Proverbs together (“Don’t imagine yourself to be quite presentable when you haven’t had a bath in weeks”…. endless jokes here for my bath hating [...]

Kisses From Katie

by Holly

Check out this amazing story of God’s love and redemption in a tiny landlocked corner of Uganda. Who would imagine that a twenty-two year old single girl from Nashville, TN would be living in Jinga, Uganda with her fourteen adopted little girls and running a ministry that feeds and educates hundreds of children. That’s exactly what [...]

Apple Crisp

by Holly

This is one of my favorite recipes. My mom started making it when I was in high school. Apple crisp is simple, but a huge family favorite in our home. Apple season is now so enjoy while you can! Those that know me, remember my little measuring issues. New friends, I don’t have a real [...]
